Do you like your job?

How do you view your job?

I was coaching a manager (Bob) who was complaining about their job and was advocating that they needed to change careers, change jobs or change organizations. I knew this person for quite some time and it wasn’t uncommon for them to be dissatisfied with their situation.

I gave them an assignment for the next week (which I encourage you to do). Write down all of your major tasks that you do on your job. Include everything from meetings, to projects to specific assignments or reviews. You can even include regular communications with others. Keep the list to the things you do most regularly whether it is daily, weekly or monthly. Generally the list will be about 20 to 30 different kinds of items.

When Bob came to the next coaching session, he had about [Read more...]

Are You Giving Your Way to Success?

June 28, 2011 by Mark Samuel Leave a Comment

I recently spent 3 full days with a friend of a friend. It was the first time we met and he introduced me to 2 potential clients and 4 colleagues that could introduce me to 3 more client. He is a successful leader of a major consulting firm, and he took me to dinner each night, in addition to paying for our lunch meetings, He arranged for transportation in two different cities and took care of all of my arrangements apart from my hotel. He demonstrated nothing but kindness and generosity.

And what does he get for my visit? Nothing, but the gratitude of helping a friend of a friend and supporting his client with a service he doesn’t offer. As he repeatedly said during my visit, If you can gain the business and help my customers, then I have the gratification of true customer service where there is no compensation for me. I just know that I was of service with no strings attached.

He is my role model for success. He understands how giving and being of service comes back with so many rewards. The first reward is the gratification that comes with being a help to others even if nothing comes from it. The second reward comes from the witnessing client satisfaction when we are hired and provide a service that is truly assists his client. The third is building the trust with  his clients that buying his service not only comes with fair trade of pay for service, but also comes with the added benefit of someone who has your back, who truly cares for you and who goes out of their way to be of service and support. Are We Creating Entitled Teenagers and Young Adults?

June 27, 2011 by Mark Samuel Leave a Comment

I just heard of two cases that raised great alarm about our future. You see, I have always believed that we must invest in our children with education because will become our future leaders. Now, I am wondering about who will be our future leaders.

A professor for a University in Canada ordered, 50 of my books on The Power of Personal Accountability. Normally, quantities of my books are sold to Managers or HR Directors. But, this was a professor in the Science Department. I called to find out how they were using my book. The professor said, “I am buying it for my students.” As she further explained, “The students today seem to have an entitled view of life. For example, a student who flunked the last test, came to me to argue about her grade. She said that she deserved a “C” because she tried hard while taking the test.” She said, “reading your book is like allowing my students to take a ‘cold shower of reality’ and the most common remark is that they see a link between accountability and happiness. After reading your book, they are more committed to studying, to their careers and to establishing clear commitments in order to improve their lives.” [Read more...]

Accountability – Laugh Your Way to Success

June 26, 2011 by Mark Samuel Leave a Comment

Accountability is perceived as such a serious topic, yet it doesn’t have to be. It begins with intention and you can choose the quality of your life as easily as picking a clear intention.

I have to admit, that most of my life has been driven to succeed. I have looked at life with the desire to accomplish my goals. And, if there was  an obstacle in my way, I was determined to overcome that obstacle. Sounds like a great formula for success right? Well, there was a fatal flaw that I recently discovered. I had such a mindset around success, everything became about driving for success and removing obstacles. [Read more...]
